The Origins
When four meat industry workers established the Progast, s.r.o. in Bratislava in 1991, they had clear ideas and plans of their sphere of activity. However, creating the concept of the company's future was more complex. Based on the experience and contacts abroad the partners became convinced that using high-quality spices and ingredients in the food industry, not an established practice at the time, was very prospective.
Development
Progast gradually started to offer and supply a variety of single and combined types of functional additives and a wide spectrum of natural spices. First as a distributor. The company started its own production in a newly constructed plant in Vlčkovce, Slovakia, in 1995.
In the meantime, Czechoslovakia split into two countries in 1993. To keep continuity of the Progast activities in the two now separate states the partners founded a sister company in the Czech Republic with its seat in Hustopeče u Brna. A state-of-the-art administrative and training centre was opened here in 2000.
Both companies coordinate their activities and develop parallelly with some degree of specialization. The production activities are predominantly based in Slovakia.
Specialization and Diversification
Although in one phase of the development of Progast the company tried to offer also other products apart from additives, the partners soon realized that to withstand the strong competition of the prominent and well-established firms and to continue developing successfully called for the maximum utilization of the specialization strengths and for the focus only on one activity.
Therefore, the company has specialized in the production and sale of spices and technological additives since 1995. On the other hand, the assortment of offered products has been significantly expanded to other target groups of customers outside the meat industry. The result of the Progast diversification of the production and sale is a selection of a wide range of spices and functional additives designed also for the producers of fresh and pre-packaged food, for fish-processing plants, dairies, bakeries, vegetable-processing plants, etc.
The field of supplies to gastronomic facilities of all types and levels – restaurants, fast-foods, catering, fast-food, catering, cookshops and retail – has been developing independently.
The above mentioned facts are based on the understanding of a proven reality which is expressed in a gradual lifestyle change of the population and a related significant change in the preparation of food, alimentation and food consumption practically all over Europe. And not only there.
The company established a specialized centre called “Gastrocentrum” in Modletice near Prague in 2003 specializing in the development and processing of products outside the traditional meat industry. The centre, apart from other sections, also accommodates a research workplace and professional demonstration kitchens, where the customers are becoming acquainted with the procedures of food and pre-packaged food preparation, including the necessary degustation of the prepared dishes. Apart from a substantial enlargement of the assortment for all segments of purchasers in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia after the year 2000, the company has initiated supplies to other countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well. The success is guaranteed by our respect for traditional flavours, customs, technological and alimentary habits complemented with new ideas and Progast know-how. The company collaborates with local firms in individual countries which are able to continue developing the corporate ideas on a long-term basis. Giving the initial training to expert workers of the companies and a constant supervision of the quality and usage of specific Progast products are self-evident. Suggestions and requirements of the regional representatives concerning new products, quality and overall cooperation are respected.
Quality and the Production Base
Progast buys the ingredients in many countries with well-tried suppliers who guarantee the required health harmlessness, complex quality and functionality of the delivered spices and additives. Laboratory inspection in all of the production stages and an elaborate ingredients supply logistics ensure high quality and sufficient quantity of ingredients for production. Furthermore, this is complemented with the successful research workers activities manifested by ever innovated formulas, modern machinery and organization and inspection of the production activities.
The Progast companies have long been holders of the EN ISO 9001: 2000 certificate and have undergone the process of recertification several times. Complex modernization and reconstruction took place in the Vlčkovce plant in 2006 which, apart from increasing the technical level and improving the production and sanitary conditions, significantly expanded the production capacity. The new plant is among the most up-to-date establishments in its field in Europe.
